Inside a High Efficiency Mechanical Room

iLevel Construction • April 25, 2025

At iLevel Construction, we take pride in designing areas that are both beautiful and useful, beginning with the mechanical room, which houses your home's systems. We recently finished a custom home with one of our cleanest and most organized mechanical rooms. In this blog, we'll take you on a tour of the setup and explain why it's a homeowner's dream, followed by a link to the finished product for you to marvel at.

1. The Furnace

The first thing you’ll notice is the high-efficiency furnace. We carefully select one based on the needs of our client’s home. Here are some of the details of this system:

  • Designed for Easy Maintenance – The furnace filter is located underneath and slides out effortlessly for quick, hassle-free changes.
  • Safety First – We care about your safety, so we always install a gas shut-off switch. In the case of the video, propane is used.
  • Expert Installation – Our team installs and ensures that the system is set up correctly. After all, using the wrong type of fuel in the furnace can cause major problems.

2. Hot Water and Well Water Systems

The next important part of our water closet is the tankless water heater, which provides endless hot water and saves energy. Plus, this house runs on well water, so we included a few extra things:

  • Sediment filter: Since the water originates straight from a well, we must ensure that our customers receive safe drinking water that is also sediment-free.
  • Controllable pressure: We built a control that modifies the water flow to prevent causing issues with the plumbing in the house or applying excessive pressure to the faucets.
  • Water softener with brine tank: This is an extra precaution that prevents minerals from damaging pipes and appliances.

3. Smart Propane and Solar Backup System

At the client’s request, this was equipped for energy resilience consisting of:

  • Pipelined propane lines that provide safe fuel with a flexible header for easy future adjustments.
  • EG4 solar backup battery, which stores solar energy and provides backup during power outages.
  • Generator connection, in case they want to charge the batteries in the future if needed.
  • Future-proofing: We installed conduits that run to the roof, which will make it easier to install more solar panels in the future if the owner desire.

4. Organized Electrical Panels (With Backup Power!)

We build a well-labeled electrical system to ensure that everything is working properly and as scheduled. We have a main panel that meets daily power needs. And we also include an emergency power panel, which provides power to appliances and essentials during power outages. The emergency power panel can power the furnace, an internet modem, a well pump, a freezer, and even the garage doors, allowing the homeowner to avoid lifting them manually.

5. Finishing Touches

We definitely didn’t skimp on materials or labor, this mechanical room you can see in the video is beautifully finished with safety and functionality in mind. Here’s what we installed:

  •  Fire-rated drywall that meets safety codes.
  • OSB walls that provide sturdy support for piping and equipment.
  • Strategically placed ductwork to efficiently supply the upper and lower areas.

Why a Good Mechanical Room is Important to Homeowners

Because a well-designed mechanical room means homeowners will find:

  • Lower energy bills (thanks to high-efficiency systems).
  • Fewer headaches (with easy access for maintenance).
  • Peace of mind (backup power and safety features).
